Memories through eulogies - DOROTHY CHUNG by Stan Chun
DOROTHY CHUNG EULOGY
St Pauls Thorndon.
29th October, 2007.
If England had their Diana then Wellington had its own Princess in Dorothy.
My memories of Dot go back to the 60’s when there seemed to be one party or wedding a week.
There were lots of young girls whom today are mothers or possibly even grandmothers but you really could not forget how they looked in those days where people dressed up rather than down and guys wore suits rather than tee shirts and jeans.
Most of the Chinese girls were very subdued , shyness being a trait of the day.
Dorothy was possibly a little less shy than others and I could not help but notice this radiance that seemed to emanate from her.
Then in April, 1962 her equally attractive sister Shirley married the ageless Harry Moon and I photographed this glorious occasion.
I have to say it was glorious because Shirley had the most beautiful lineup of bridesmaids one would ever see with Dot, Margarite Ngan and her sisters Jennifer and Dora.
They were dressed in brilliant gold gowns and were crowned with pearled tiaras.
It was like a line up of princesses and Dorothy indeed was the Princess of the Princesses with all due respect to the others.
She was later to marry the luckiest of the lucky, my nephew Howard and from there on they were off to establish their own path and future at the Zodiac Fruit in Hataitai.

We unfortunately lost track of each other as our families walked on different paths but I would occasionally come across Dot and share a few moments of pleasantries.
She never changed her polite mannerisms.
Then some years ago my brother Alan was struck down with a bypass and a stroke.
She was not to forget Alan had filmed her wedding and sent him well wishes and some gifts.
Alan was so pleased to receive these and I recall his phone conversation to her for to look after herself because everyone loved her.
And I think those words said it all.
Everyone did love her.
And today everyone here shares Howard and Dot’s family’s grief and sorrow at losing such a wonderful person and mother.
Only in God can we trust to find her a place with the angels….and I am sure she is with them.
Thank you for listening.
