You might have read the rave reviews of my friend Alison's new book, "As the Earth Turns Silver". It's a novel partly based on her grandfather who had a fruitshop in Adelaide Road in the early 1900s.
Adelaide Road is just down the street from our family's shop in Riddiford Street - so we're almost neighbours. And her granddad would certainly have known our family as we're all Jung Seng.
Anyway, this is a great book. It's beautifully written and the story's utterly compelling. It's also great for Wellingtonians because it's got all the little Wellington references in it.
And check out pages 82-83. Sound familiar? It should do because it comes from the life of our grandmother.
Big thanks to Alison for taking the stories of our ancestors and giving them new life. As someone who's familiar with the stories, it was so exciting to see them reinterpreted and put in a setting that gives the stories context and emotional depth. It really gave me a new appreciation of what it might actually have been like to live in that era. So thanks Alison!
I bought my copy of "As the Earth Turns Silver" at Unity books for $37. But I think you can get it at any of the bookshops. It's also available in Australia, the UK, France and parts of Asia.

I will definitely buy a copy of this book! I was going to get it anyway after reading all the rave reviews, but now I have a special reason to have my own copy. Thanks Kirsten.
Kia ora Kirsten,

It's a great book. Only one thing I'd recommend and that's not to start it late at night. I started reading it before bedtime, and before you know it it was into the small hours on a week night. of course I had to find out what happened so I skipped to the end and read the last pages. BAD BAD PERSON! It was still good though - even going back and reading the middle bit.
